*What does the waterproof index mean in millimeters (mm)?

The level of waterproofness of a textile material measured in millimeters (mmH20) refers, not to the thickness of the material or its polyurethane (plastic) coating, but to the pressure from which the water is able to pass through the material. The standard leak test involves applying water pressure to the back side of a fabric sample until 3 drops of water can pass through the material. For example, an index of 1500 mmH20 means that a material can support 1,500 mm of water on top of the material before water seeps through.
